Blue Print For Success

When I have time I want to create a "Blue Print For Success". I will use it as a guide for new assistant coaches. The following are the topics I expect to cover:

Team Culture & Philosophy
Staff duties
Academics
Practice organization
Defensive philosophy
Offensive philosophy
Off-season training
Player & coaches profiles
Life skills

I believe this document can be a valuable addition to the program I expect to lead. It can also provide structure not only for basketball, but for all athletic programs. I understand anytime one takes on this type of project it is time consuming and must be updated yearly, but the project once completed will be valuable.
If you have any suggestions of areas I may not have listed please feel free to add them and I will see how it fits.

Remember this, "Your Success Is Measured By What Your Team Accomplishes." Unknown author

Finally, if you get a chance to i want to encourage you to read, "The Station", a poem by Robert J. Hastings. It is really very good.

Team Building

Good Team Chemistry can help to propel team towards success.
I scheduled our "Team Charge Session" for the second weekend of November in Pismo Beach. We would arrive of Friday evening, get our food, luggage and sleeping items unloaded and head to the beach for dinner (usually the Splash Cafe).
A schedule of our team building activities is listed below
Friday- 8:00pm to 10:00pm- Team Round Table- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (History of the girls basketball program; past, present and future), Coat of Arms (these are displayed in our locker room for the entire year and given back to the players at our team banquet), Player information and goal sheet (these are due on Sunday morning before breakfast), Movie-Love & Basketball.
Saturday- 9:30- Breakfast (a group of four players are responsible to cook breakfast).
11:00am to 1:30pm- Thank you cards (players write a card of thanks to an adult that has had a positive impact on their life), Puzzle (players choose an already cut up piece of tag board. They decorate it with their name, number, one individual goal & one team goal, at the conclusion we share them). Team Scavenger Hunt (in groups of four they are given a list of items to collect. The first group back with all the required items receives a prize).
2:00pm to 3:30- Lunch (see breakfast), other groups prepare for the team talent show.
3:30pm to 5:00pm- Free time (the players usually goes to the beach)
5:30pm to 7:00pm- Acrostic Poem's, Compliment Cards (a 5x7 card is passed around by each player and they are to write one positive comment about that player, players are asked to keep this card in place where they can see it each day).
7:30pm- Dinner (see breakfast)
9:00pm- Team talent show
10:00pm- Movie- Hoosiers
Sunday- 8:00am- Breakfast (see above)
9:30am to 11:00am- Closing activities- Round Table (what we learned, how we stay together, how to handle disagreements, etc.), 11:00am- Clean-up the house we stayed, load-up and depart.
I believe that this outing was one reason we were successful.

A Coaches Role

If You Don't Stretch Your Limits, You Will Set Your Limits- Rob Gilbert
What is our role, as coaches in our community/society today?
In my opinion high school coaches do not receive the type of compensation I believe they deserve. Good high school coaches put in lots of time building their programs. I also believe they have a huge amount of responsibility being role models and mentors for the student-athletes they coach. We may be the only positive adult in they may come in contact with on a daily basis.
So ponder the following thoughts and questions.
* What impact do I have on my student-athletes?
* How much influence do I have on my student-athletes?
* Can I define my purpose for coaching?
* What role do I play in the lives of my student-athletes?
I hope you will take a moment to think about these important issues. You are encouraged to respond as well. I will offer my response to these issues in upcoming posts.
Hava Great Day! :)
